About Us

Picture
First Unitarian Society is a diverse, welcoming, community which celebrates spiritual and religious freedom, nurtures growth and learning, and works toward a more compassionate, tolerant, and sustainable world. The First Unitarian Society (FUS) is affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA)  Our religious organization is non-creedal and encourages free inquiry and exploration of ideas.

Members are not required to share the same beliefs; we come from a variety of backgrounds including lifelong UUs, Humanists, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, pagans, agnostics, atheists, and others. FUS welcomes gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons. FUS is a lay led congregation. This means that we are self-governing. We engage ministers and other paid speakers to provide services, and the rest of the services are lay led, presenting a variety of formats and subjects including participative services and services presented by members and friends.

Our History
The first Unitarian church in Pueblo was established in the late 19th century, The building no longer exists and we have no records of that church’s history during the Great Depression and thereafter. When the second congregation, the Unitarian Fellowship of Pueblo, was founded in the 1950's there was no other Unitarian or Universalist presence in town.

At first services were held in homes, but as membership increased space was rented at the YWCA. In 1962 we constructed our original building across from City Park, which was designed by Elizabeth Wright Ingraham, granddaughter of Frank Lloyd Wright. In September 2005 we relocated to Pueblo's East Side, and adopted the name First Unitarian Society (FUS) in 2012. In 2018 we returned to our roots and moved back to our beloved original building at 110 Calla Ave.
